Mediterranean Melodies

Piano duet

I started writing these piano pieces in July of 2023 for my friend, pianist Mary Straub. Little did I know the significance of exploring pieces common to regions of the Middle East. In October of that year, the Gaza War began. My hope is that these arrangements will help us all remember shared cultural heritage.

  1. Misirlou- a folk song from the Eastern Mediterranean region. Arabic, Jewish and Greek musicians were playing this tune in the beginning of the 20th century.
The title means "Egyptian woman" and refers to the story of a Greek Christian man and an Egyptian Muslim woman

  2. Ma Navu- a song and dance in the Iraqi Jewish tradition composed in the 19th century by a rabbi in Iraq. The title means "how beautiful."

  3. Mayim, Mayim-an extremely popular Israeli folk song and dance. The meaning is "water, water."
